Splinters

words creep into veins,

engulf cells,
like whispered words from lovers

under covers

a pretense.

cutting deeper than splinters,

they emerge,

months later,

with a bittersweet longing

attached.

i emerge

from underwater,

lungs gasping for air,

still breathing,

still alive.
